Conjunctio - Solo Exhibition 2020
Conjunctio is a body of work made over 2019 / 20. This includes three large scale works made on the Continuum Residency at Husk in Limehouse. During this time I set myself the challenge of making artworks primarily using found materials and objects. This included; recycled hessian coffee sacks from the cafe upstairs, a broken old walnut table left discarded on the street, an old pregnancy pillow, a collection of old wool, plastic bottles, cut up old paintings and works on paper, discarded electrical wire, old rope found mud-larking the Thames, bark from a tree, burnt wood, the head of an old mop, tarnished sheets of copper, ivy vines cut down from an overgrown local lay-by etc. I associated these materials both with Husk and our local surroundings.
The residency was an interesting experience, as I found myself working in a basement studio within the belly of a Christian organisation. I think I was the only non Christian in the building! The people working in the cafe, gallery and running the residency were so genuinely kind, loving and sweet. They had a really lovely community, which I felt privileged to be a part of during my time there. Although we had theological and theoretical differences I believe that the art I was making was understood on a deeper level. I do wholeheartedly believe that creating art is a religious experience that is personal to me. One my favourite Crits included me trying to explain the possible links between alchemy, psychology, the creative process and the Self. The residency leader (who was studying theology and biblical studies at the time) looked at me with a puzzled expression and said “that sounds very similar to what Jesus was saying”. I did push my luck a bit far when I made a giant phallic-like wand sculpture with a piece of writing about Dioniysus attached for the exhibition.
